The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) in partnership with the Southern California Regional Energy Network (SoCalREN), this week recognized 16 cities for their commitment to increasing energy efficiency in municipal facilities and engaging in long-term strategic planning for energy efficiency in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV).
The recognition came as part of the biennial Energy Champion Awards, which celebrated agencies demonstrating outstanding leadership in energy efficiency, sustainability, and climate action. Honorees were recognized not only for reducing energy use but also for helping build stronger, more resilient communities through meaningful public outreach, energy-efficient project implementation, and environmental policy advancement.

“We are incredibly proud of our Energy Champion awardees,” said SGVCOG Executive Director Marisa Creter. “These cities are setting the standard for climate leadership in the San Gabriel Valley and are proving that local action can make a powerful impact on our environment and our communities.”
This year’s Energy Champion honorees include Diamond Bar, Monrovia, Pomona, Rosemead and Walnut in the Champion Tier; Alhambra and South El Monte in the Platinum Tier; Duarte and Irwindale in the Gold Tier; and El Monte, Glendora, Montebello, Monterey Park, San Dimas, San Gabriel and South Pasadena in the Silver Tier.
The Energy Champion Award Program recognizes public agencies for the actions they take, ranging from attending seminars to implementing projects. Each eligible action earns points, which determine an agency’s recognition level. Agencies are placed into one of four levels based on participation in education and outreach activities and completion of energy-efficiency projects at municipal facilities.
All cities, school districts, and special districts in the SGV are eligible to participate.
The SGVCOG is a regional government planning agency that aims to maximize the quality of life in the San Gabriel Valley. As a joint powers authority, the SGVCOG unites 31 cities, unincorporated communities in Los Angeles County Supervisorial Districts 1 and 5, and key local and regional public agencies.
The SGVCOG is the largest and most diverse sub-regional council of governments in Los Angeles County.
