U.S. Rep. Ted W. Lieu (D-Santa Monica, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Manhattan Beach), one of three Computer Science Majors in Congress, spoke at a TedX Talk in Los Angeles yesterday, where he made the case for strong regulation of AI, calling it “insane” not to do so as soon as possible.
In his talk, Rep. Lieu draws a parallel to the creation of the modern FDA in the 1930s, which happened after more than 100 people died due to unregulated medicine containing antifreeze. The Congressman calls on his colleagues in Congress to take a “proactive approach” to avoid three kinds of even more urgent AI dangers:
- AI that can destroy the world
- AI that can kill individuals
- AI that can cause a large number of other significant kinds of harm.
