Hahn announces food distribution events amid CalFresh cut-off

LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn (D-Long Beach, San Pedro, Diamond Bar, Whittier, Cerritos, Downey, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hacienda Heights) announced Friday that amid the ongoing federal government shutdown and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s suspension of funding for CalFresh and SNAP food benefits, there will be four large-scale food distribution events across her district.

Cerritos Mayor Yokoyama honors Dr. Dawnn Lewis

Cerritos Mayor Frank Aurelio Yokoyama

Cerritos Mayor Frank Aurelio Yokoyama announced in his weekly newsletter that the City is holding a special event tonight honoring multi-talented and award-winning actress, singer/songwriter, and company executive Dr. Dawnn Lewis.

“For five seasons, Lewis was the voice of Carol Freeman, captain of the U.S.S. Cerritos on the animated television series “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” Viewers are familiar with the name of the crew’s ship, the U.S.S. Cerritos, which is indeed named after our amazing City. Her performance, which earned Dr. Lewis a Women’s Image Network Award and NAACP Image Award nomination, is one of her many career accomplishments,” wrote Yokoyama.

“I’ll sit down with the accomplished Dr. Lewis to talk about her career journey. From her role in the 1980’s sitcom “A Different World” to her Grammy Award-winning music and experience leading a nonprofit supporting underprivileged youth, Dr. Lewis has a fascinating story to tell.”

The event is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 3, at the Cerritos Library Skyline Room, 18025 Bloomfield Avenue at the Cerritos City Hall complex. All are welcome and refreshments will be available.

Friedman demands Trump Administration release emergency food assistance

U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman

U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman (D-Burbank, Glendale, West Hollywood, Hollywood) demanded on Friday that the Trump Administration release emergency food assistance funds just hours after a federal judge ordered it.

Standing alongside Project Angel Food CEO Richard Ayoub, Friedman warned that if SNAP is halted at midnight tonight, more than 1.5 million people in Los Angeles County, including 115,200 residents of CA-30, could go without critical nutritional support.

“There is no excuse for the Trump Administration to defy a court order and deny food assistance to millions of Americans. SNAP shouldn’t be a political bargaining chip, it’s how many families in my district survive. The Trump Administration must release the funds today, no more delays, no more excuses,” said Friedman. “Meanwhile, I’ll continue working to bring Congressional Republicans to the negotiating table. We must work to protect affordable healthcare, end this shutdown, and bring down costs for the American people.”

The ruling, issued by a federal judge in Boston, directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to use its contingency reserve to fund November SNAP benefits. Yet, the administration has not confirmed whether it will comply, leaving more than 42 million Americans in limbo.
