May 29, 2025: Bass opens LA City for business; Gomez Huddles up in Koreatown; Burbank scores goooooooool!

Bass opens LA City for business

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass today will announce the launch of the new Business Navigator, a centralized online hub that will help local small businesses access permits, resources and procurement opportunities more easily and efficiently.

The launch comes as Bass continues efforts to open City Hall for business – helping hundreds of businesses access millions in funding; ensuring that local, minority-owned small businesses are contracted to work on capital infrastructure projects ahead of the coming major events; and making it easier for studios and producers to shoot in Los Angeles.

The official announcement will be made today at the 2025 ProcureLA Summit, which will introduce small and local businesses to contracting opportunities within the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles World Airports and Port of Los Angeles.

The 2025 ProcureLA Summit is slated for between 8 am – 2 pm, today, Thursday, May 29, at the Audrey Irmas Pavilion, 3643 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles.

Gomez Huddles up in Koreatown

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Downtown LA, Koreatown, Boyle Heights, Eagle Rock) yesterday hosted a roundtable with the Korean business community in LA to hear firsthand how Trump’s tariffs is disrupting trade, delaying shipments, and raising the cost of essential goods.

The federal lawmaker also shared his push to end Trump’s tariffs, prevent him from punishing allies, and put Congress back in charge of trade.

“I met with Korean American business owners in Koreatown who are being hit hard by Trump’s reckless tariffs — prices are up, shipments are delayed, and it’s getting harder to plan for tomorrow,” said Gomez. “These aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet, they’re family-run shops, local jobs, and people trying to build a future. I’m fighting to end Trump’s damaging tariffs and stop him from punishing our allies because our community needs trade policies that help them thrive, not ones that drive up costs for customers or threaten their businesses.”

During the discussion, Korean American businesses discussed how these tariffs and tax policies have driven up container fees and import duties, while causing uncertainty that makes it hard to grow or plan. Many also stressed the need for better workforce development support and a business environment that works for small businesses in LA.

The Koreatown visit comes after Gomez’s recently visited the Port of LA to hear directly from port staff and highlight the real-world consequences of President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods — including a projected 35% drop in cargo volume next week.

Burbank scores goooooooool!

Burbank Mayor Nikki Perez

The City of Burbank announced yesterday that one of the most storied soccer clubs in Mexico and a global icon in the world of football, Club de Futbol Monterrey (Rayados), will pay a community event visit to McCambridge Park next month.

The visit will come as part of the Rayados’ participation in the FIFA Club World Cup USA 2025. The team will be competing in three group stage matches at the Rose Bowl Stadium against Inter Milan (Italy), River Plate (Argentina), and Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan).

The City of Burbank Parks and Recreation Department has been selected as the host site for this special event due to its outstanding impact in the field of Adaptive Sports programming. The department has garnered national attention for its inclusive recreational initiatives, most notably the Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo, which drew over 3,000 visitors in its most recent edition.

“We are grateful to Club de Futbol Monterrey and Angel City Sports for their generous support and commitment to inclusion through sport. It’s an honor for our community to welcome them to Burbank for this special event,” said Burbank Mayor Nikki Perez. “Their partnership has helped us take a meaningful step forward in expanding our Adaptive Sports programming, creating opportunities for athletes of all abilities. Together, we’re showing what’s possible when sport is truly accessible to everyone.”

The event is slated for between 10 am – 1 pm, Sunday, June 15 at McCambridge Park, 1515 N. Glenoaks Blvd in Burbank.
