Durazo’s legislation strengthens immigrants

Sen. María Elena Durazo

Sen. María Elena Durazo (D-East Hollywood, East Los Angeles, Highland Park, Los Angeles, Pico-Union, South Montebello, Vernon) yesterday urged legislators to pass two bills to strengthen protections undocumented immigrants may face against federal authorities.

The first measure, SB 635, the Street Vendor Protection Act, ensures that street vendors receive necessary protections, preventing their sensitive information from being shared with immigration authorities. Without these safeguards, vendors may be forced to weigh the risks of selling food and goods against the fear of displacement or deportation.

The second measure, SB 580, Strengthening Immigrant Protection Response Guides, strengthens the Attorney General’s Office model policies and database guidelines for state and local agencies on civil immigration enforcement, ensuring that all Californians, regardless of immigration status, can access public services without fear.

“As the proud daughter of immigrant farmworkers, I know firsthand the value that immigrant communities bring to California. Immigrant men, women, and children continue to face the threat of family separation through deportation. The federal government has initiated aggressive and violent tactics that are terrorizing our neighborhoods,” said Durazo.

“That is why I have introduced SB 635 and SB 580. These two bills will help support our street vendor businesses and ensure that workers across the state are given the proper guidance. These bills ensure that community members deserve the right to access services and continue living without fear,” she added.

Kamlager-Dove blasts House Republicans

U.S. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove

Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Culver City, View Park-Windsor Hills, parts of South LA) yesterday blasted House Republicans for passing President Trump’s one big spending and tax cut bill.

“House Republicans just sold out their constituents to the highest bidders: Donald Trump and his billionaire boys club. Debated and brought to the House Floor in the dead of night, they passed a monstrosity of a bill that strips millions of Americans of their healthcare, food assistance, housing, and more,” said Kamlager-Dove.

“Never before has it been clearer that Donald Trump and the Republican Party have completely abandoned seniors and working families. Trump’s reckless tariffs have already inflated the prices of everyday essentials like groceries and clothing. Now, they are gutting the very safety net programs that keep Americans alive—all to fund tax breaks for billionaires like Elon Musk. Meanwhile, Moody’s just downgraded the U.S. credit outlook, which will drive up interest rates, loans, and household debt.

“The American people are suffering, and Donald Trump is to blame–along with every spineless Republican who refuses to stand up for their constituents. I am urging my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put the needs of their constituents first and vote against this Big Backstabbing Bill. Millions of lives are at stake.”
