Gomez hosts massive town hall

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Downtown LA, Koreatown, Boyle Heights, Eagle RockCA-34) hosted a Tele Town hall with 4,535 constituents to discuss how he’s fighting back against the Trump administration’s lawless attacks on immigrant families, the illegal deployment of federal troops in LA, and the Republicans’ Big Billionaire Bill that slashes Medicaid and threatens Social Security to fund more tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.

“Thank you to the 4,533 Angelenos who joined my Tele Town Hall tonight—it’s always good hearing from you,” said Gomez. “From lawless ICE raids to protecting Medicaid and Social Security, we discussed how we’re fighting back and standing up for our working families. We might not agree on everything, but one thing’s clear: we must stop Trump and the billionaire establishment taking root in DC.”

Over the course of the Tele Town Hall, Gomez outlined his efforts to:

Bass lifts Downtown LA curfew

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lifted the curfew for Downtown Los Angeles yesterday, following continued successful crime prevention and suppression efforts. Bass instituted the curfew with support from elected officials, law enforcement and business leaders seven days ago.

“The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community,” said Bass. “I am lifting the curfew effective today, and as we continue quickly adapting to chaos coming from Washington, and I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed. My priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the Downtown neighborhoods.”

Two days ago, Bass reduced the curfew hours as part of a phased approach, following a marked reduction in acts of violence, vandalism and looting that happened during the immediate escalation of the situation by the Trump Administration.

The curfew area previously covered Downtown Los Angeles, representing less than eight square miles of the city.

“The curfew has been an effective tool in helping us maintain public safety in the Downtown Los Angeles area and deter those looking to exploit peaceful protests for criminal activity. The LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the area and continue to monitor conditions closely to protect lives, uphold the right to lawful assembly, and safeguard property,” said LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell.

Brownley on Israeli-Iranian airstrikes

U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley

U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas) was critical of President Donald Trump in the wake of the Israeli and Iranian air strikes in the Middle East..

“Donald Trump has done virtually nothing to stop Iran’s continued enrichment of weapons-grade nuclear material or to curb its support for terrorist organizations that threaten Israel, destabilize the Middle East, and endanger U.S. interests since he walked away from the nuclear weapons treaty Obama negotiated,” said Brownley.

“While I’m not generally supportive of Prime Minister Netanyahu, as he often seems intent on addressing every security challenge through military means, Israel unquestionably has the right to defend itself. And Iran has unquestionably and repeatedly threatened the security of Israel, directly and through their proxies.

“While I have hope, I also have little faith, that Donald Trump has the leadership skills or the interest to stabilize the region or secure lasting peace for Israel, but in the leadership vacuum he’s created, one thing is clear: Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon and they have continued, in defiance of international nonproliferation treaties, to move toward acquiring nuclear weapons. Let’s be clear, a nuclear-armed Iran would endanger not just Israel — but the entire world.

“I would like both Israel and Iran to de-escalate the current conflict. But ultimately, there will be no stability in the Middle East, which requires a secure Israel, hope for the Palestinian people, and a denuclearized Iran, without diplomacy and U.S. engagement. The President needs to step up and provide the leadership this moment demands.”

Compton issues immigration enforcement awareness

Compton Mayor Emma Sharif

The City of Compton issued an immigration enforcement awareness community update yesterday.

The City of Compton understands that recent immigration enforcement actions have caused concern and fear for many in our community. We want to provide clarity on the city’s role and limitations when it comes to federal immigration enforcement, the City wrote in an update.

  • The City of Compton is not notified in advance of immigration operations conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These actions are federal matters, and local municipalities do not receive prior notice.
  • Immigration enforcement is handled exclusively at the federal level. It is important for residents to know that the City of Compton does not have jurisdiction over these actions and does not participate in their planning or execution.
  • The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has informed us it does not engage in immigration enforcement and are prohibited from doing so, except in limited circumstances as required by law. We appreciate their continued commitment to community safety and transparency.
  • The City of Compton’s priority is the safety, dignity, and well-being of all members of our community, regardless of background or immigration status.
  • During this time, it is especially important that individuals and families know their rights when it comes to immigration enforcement.
